An oft repeated rule of filmmaking is “show, don’t tell.” The earliest examples of film after all were silent movies, where every line of dialogue needed to be represented by a title card, breaking up the action with every utterance, so in order to keep the action going one needed to minimize dialogue. Even in the era of talkies, describing action rather than showing it is a cheap trick.
