Halloween
August 31, 2007: The Final Year In Cinema Week 35
The moment I saw that the week’s most notable film release was Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween I think I audibly groaned. There is no good reason for this movie to exist. If you want to watch a Halloween movie the 1978 original remains in print. If you want to experience Rob Zombie’s whole aesthetic you can just watch the video for “Dragula” and honestly have a far better time.
Then I remembered that the essay on Halloween would be due on Labor Day weekend, and y’know what? No one is making me do labor I do not wish to perform on Labor Day weekend. So I did not watch Rob Zombie’s Halloween. I instead watched the video for “Dragula”. I advise you to do the same.
Rating: Who cares
Economics: Halloween opened at #1 at the box office on August 31, 2007 ahead of Superbad in its third week of release. Its $28 million opening weekend promptly fell off a cliff as audiences realized that this movie sucks shit. It would ultimately make $77 million worldwide which is enough to make it a success given its $15 million budget, but Zombie has largely fallen off as a filmmaker since. His latest film is a Netflix original that’s a remake of The Munsters. Like… the Munsters… Jesus….
Best unlikely combination: My buddy Eric created a playlist I love called “A Day Without Hellbillies”. The playlist is literally just the albums Hellbilly Deluxe by Rob Zombie and A Day Without Rain by Enya, bouncing between artists every other track. It sounds absurd. It is absurd. It also weirdly really works. Listening to more than one Rob Zombie track at once is exhausting. Listening to more than one Enya track at once will put you to sleep. Putting them next to each other is the best kind of whiplash.

Anyway happy Labor Day. go grill something.
